Indie Dev Log Entry - #1

Beginning my indie development journey: My plan to start an app business.

2 min read

I've always wanted to create my own apps but never felt ready to take the plunge. Well, I figured now is the time to do it. Even though the title suggests I have a plan, I don't. I just have some app ideas, and I will build them. That's my plan.

The first app that I started working on was a Book Tracker App. The idea stemmed from the fact that I always had too much friction adding a book to my reading list, or I'd write it down and never find it again. So, I decided to build an app that will minimise this friction, making remembering what you are reading and want to read easy. I tried working on this app a couple of times, but I always ran into some obstacles and abandoned the project.

This time, I made sure to push through and I currently have a working MVP. I will be releasing it in the next few weeks, after I iron out some leftover bugs.

I'm glad I started and didn't give up. The lesson here is consistency over perfectionism. I didn't focus on the app's design or features this time. I made sure to work on it every single day, even if it was just for 5 minutes. This not only helped me move faster but also improved my ability to break down tasks. Now, if I have only 5 minutes, instead of tackling something big like authentication, I can focus on smaller tasks like redesigning a text input field.

That's all for this log. Let me know if you're working on something and how it's going. See you next week in the next dev log entry. Thanks for reading!
